Alumni Interview: Christion Wiles

Christion Wiles graduated with MMB/MBA dual degrees in 2014. She is a senior associate, pork and poultry marketing, for Zoetis in RTP.

Why did you choose the MMB program at NC State?

“I chose the MMB program because it was the perfect way to take the scientific knowledge that I had gained in undergrad and apply it practically to the biotech industry. I had been pre-veterinary in undergrad, but I didn’t want to be a clinical veterinarian and I didn’t want to work in a lab. The MMB program offered me skill-building opportunities that applied to the animal health industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and a vast array of other areas. Additionally, the industrial case studies provided me with the experience I needed to decide that industry was, in fact, the direction I wanted to go.”

How has the MMB program helped you?

“It exposed me to a variety of different types of research, industries, and different types of people. Not only did I learn how to create and evaluate scientific and commercial data, but I gained the confidence needed to make decisions based on that data. The MMB also allowed me to earn an MBA. Those three years combined prepared me for the role that I am in now and will help me grow into larger roles at an accelerated rate.”

What are your career goals?

“I am working to become a leader in a small or mid-sized biotech company.”

Why should prospective students consider applying to the MMB program?

“The MMB program offers so many opportunities to students on professional and personal levels. Students gain industry experience, learn how to work in diverse teams, and build an invaluable network of peers and professionals. Whether your goals are to become Director of R&D or CEO, the MMB program gives you the foundation you need to get there.”

What should MMB students focus on during their time in the program?

“Learn from your professors, impress your industrial case study companies, network as much as possible, and have fun with the friends you make.”

What is the best career advice you have received?

“Treat everyone as you would treat your customers – your boss, your peers, the interns. They’re all your customers.”
