Purchasing Food and Beverages for Break Rooms

As shared with Department Heads and Center Directors in January 2024, food, snacks, and beverages purchased to stock breakrooms or other gathering spaces for department employees can only be purchased using personal funds and not NCSU funds (state, discretionary, etc). If these items are being purchased for a “celebration” event or internal meeting, please follow the guidance and documentation requirements in the Conference & Meeting Expense Guide.  Please note that this also applies to Marketplace orders which must also follow these guidelines. Therefore, if utilizing Marketplace to purchase food for human consumption, please also provide the required documentation. If the food is not for human consumption, e.g., for research, the justification needs to state that and no additional documentation will be requested.
