Smithfield Agreement Reports
This agreement, established in 2000 between the NC Attorney General office and Smithfield Foods (and its contractors), entailed funding independent research and demonstration projects to identify Environmentally Superior Technologies (ESTs) capable of replacing traditional lagoon-and-sprayfield systems. The resulting reports, produced primarily by NC State University, evaluated candidate technologies’ environmental, technical, and economic performance and provided the scientific basis for state decisions on permitting, incentives, and modernization of swine waste management.
