{"id":156,"date":"2021-07-13T20:47:14","date_gmt":"2021-07-13T20:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/units.cals.ncsu.edu\/microbiology-graduate-program\/?page_id=156"},"modified":"2025-12-15T21:25:44","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T21:25:44","slug":"master-of-microbiology","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/units.cals.ncsu.edu\/microbiology-graduate-program\/degree-programs\/master-of-microbiology\/","title":{"rendered":"Master&#8217;s of Microbiology (M.M.)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our non-thesis Master&#8217;s of Microbiology (M.M.) degree is perfect for those who want to expand their knowledge in&nbsp;microbiology and do not wish to pursue research training, such as pre-professional students and those employed in the biotechnology industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re interested in a research-intensive program, we encourage you to apply to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/units.cals.ncsu.edu\/microbiology-graduate-program\/degree-programs\/master-of-science\/\">M.S. in Microbiology<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/units.cals.ncsu.edu\/microbiology-graduate-program\/degree-programs\/phd\/\">Ph.D. in Microbiology<\/a>&nbsp;programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">M.M. Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-padded-list\">\n<li>Students must earn a minimum 3.0 GPA overall on graduate coursework at NC&#160;State.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students must be enrolled in at least one credit during the semester they apply to graduate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>M.M. students must be continuously enrolled and complete all degree requirements within six calendar years, beginning on the date they start graduate courses for this degree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upon entering the M.M. program, all students meet with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/units.cals.ncsu.edu\/microbiology-graduate-program\/people\/mrhyman\/\">Director of Graduate Programs (DGP)<\/a>&nbsp;and select a faculty advisor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the start of their first semester, students consult with their selected advisor and prepare a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/grad.ncsu.edu\/students\/degree-planning\/\">Graduate Degree Audit.<\/a> All degree audits must be approved by the DGP.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each year in the program, students must complete&nbsp;a Graduate Student Progress evaluation form with their advisor and submit it to the DGP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">M.M. Coursework<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students pursuing their M.M. must complete 30 credit hours total to earn their degree. <em>Research is not part of this degree.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-subdued-list\">\n<li><strong>12 credit hours of core microbiology classes<\/strong> (listed below) <strong>are required<\/strong>. <em>NOTE: MB&nbsp;351&nbsp;(General Microbiology) is a required prerequisite for many of these courses. <\/em>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>MB&nbsp;714 &nbsp;&#8211; Microbial Metabolic Regulation (3 credit hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MB&nbsp;718&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8211; Introductory Virology&nbsp;(3 credit hours)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MB&nbsp;751\/IMM&nbsp;751 &#8211; Immunology&nbsp;(3 credit hours)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MB&nbsp;758\/GN&nbsp;758&nbsp; &#8211; Microbial Genetics &amp; Genomics (3 credit hours)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MB&nbsp;535\/MB&nbsp;435&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8211; Bacterial Pathogenesis&nbsp;(3 credit hours)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-subdued-list\">\n<li><strong>18 graded credit hours of courses in the microbiology or life science disciplines<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Must be approved on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/grad.ncsu.edu\/students\/degree-planning\/\">Graduate Degree Audit&nbsp;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students may also choose to take additional graded courses\u00a0in relevant disciplines (as approved for their
