Indicating the research of two to four specific MGP faculty is encouraged. You may contact faculty directly through their email address. Clearly state your past or current research experience, and how it has prepared you for graduate level research and training.&nbsp;<strong>Your personal statement should be no more than 1,000 words.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\"><a class=\"accordion-item__header collapsed\" href=\"#ncst-accordion-item-1-3\" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-3\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#ncst-accordion-item-1-3\" aria-controls=\"ncst-accordion-item-1-3\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\"><span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span><\/span><h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h5\"><strong>Official transcripts from a four-year bachelor\u2019s program<\/strong><\/h2><\/a><div class=\"collapse panel-collapse accordion-item__content-container \" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-1-3\" aria-labelledby=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-3\" data-parent=\"#ncst-accordion-1\"><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cumulative GPAs at the undergraduate or M.S. level are considered during the selection process, and are often 3.5 and higher for successful applicants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">International applicants with a three-year degree must have their degree credentialed through an agency such as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/wes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Education Service<\/a> or <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/naces.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Association of Credential Evaluation Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\"><a class=\"accordion-item__header collapsed\" href=\"#ncst-accordion-item-1-7\" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-7\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#ncst-accordion-item-1-7\" aria-controls=\"ncst-accordion-item-1-7\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\"><span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span><\/span><h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h5\">Official TOEFL\/IELTS scores (International Students only)<\/h2><\/a><div class=\"collapse panel-collapse accordion-item__content-container \" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-1-7\" aria-labelledby=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-7\" data-parent=\"#ncst-accordion-1\"><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be eligible for admission to graduate study at NCSU, all non-US citizen applicants (i.e., non-resident aliens and permanent residents) must demonstrate proficiency in the English language at a level necessary to be successful in a graduate program at NC&#160;State. This requirement can be met for most applicants in one of the following ways; however, some programs may require additional evidence of English proficiency:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/toefl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Test of English as a Foreign Language<\/a>&nbsp;(TOEFL) (taken prior to January 21, 2026) with a total score of at least 80 on the Internet-based Test (iBT), and with minimum test scores for each section of:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Listening 18 points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reading 18 points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing 18 points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speaking 18 points \u2013 for admission, 23 points \u2013 for TA appointment where TA has direct verbal interactions with students, 26 points \u2013 for TA appointment where TA presents lectures in the class or laboratory NOTE: The current computer- and paper-based versions of the TOEFL test will be given until the iBT version is implemented in a particular location. Computer-based TOEFL scores must be 213 or higher (with at least 17 on three sections and no section score below 13). The paper-based test requires a score of 550 or higher (with scores of 50 on at least two of the three sections and no section score below 45).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (taken after January 21, 2026) with a total score of at least 4 on the Internet-based<br>Test (iBT), and with minimum test scores for each section of:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Listening 4<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reading 4<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing 4<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speaking 4 \u2013 for admission, 5 \u2013 for TA appointment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide Academic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ielts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International English Language Testing System<\/a>&nbsp;(IELTS) scores with an overall band score of at least 6.5. General IELTS scores will not be accepted. Minimum test scores for each section are listed below:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Listening 6.5<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reading 6.5<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing 6.5<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speaking 6.5 \u2013 for admission, 7.0 \u2013 for TA appointment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/englishtest.duolingo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Duolingo<\/a>&nbsp;with a total score of 110 or better&nbsp;AND minimum sub scores of:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Literacy 110<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comprehension 110<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conversation 110 &#8211; for admission, 125 for TA appointment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Production 110 &#8211; for admission, 125 for TA appointment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be a citizen of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grad.ncsu.edu\/students\/rules-and-regulations\/handbook\/english-as-official-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">country where English is the official language<\/a>\u00a0and the language of instruction in higher education;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have successfully (cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher) completed\u00a0at least one year of full-time study in a degree program at a regionally accredited four-year US based College or university.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">English proficiency test scores must be no older than two years (24 months) prior to the beginning of the requested entry term.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\"><a class=\"accordion-item__header collapsed\" href=\"#ncst-accordion-item-1-9\" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-9\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#ncst-accordion-item-1-9\" aria-controls=\"ncst-accordion-item-1-9\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\"><span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span><\/span><h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h5\"><strong>Three (3) letters of recommendation<\/strong> from professional references<\/h2><\/a><div class=\"collapse panel-collapse accordion-item__content-container \" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-1-9\" aria-labelledby=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-9\" data-parent=\"#ncst-accordion-1\"><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most relevant and helpful letters are requested from former supervisors of laboratory research experiences, REUs, internships or other experiential learning opportunities.&nbsp;People who can attest to your commitment, motivation, work ethic, creativity and ability to work with others will help you the most.&nbsp;Recommendations must be submitted with application by the December 1<sup>st<\/sup> deadline. <em>Personal references will not be accepted.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Financial Support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many more applications than students who can be admitted. Our goal is to provide RA, TA or Fellowship support to those accepted into the research degree programs (Ph.D. and M.S.).&nbsp;<em>Priority for stipend support is given to Ph.D. applicants<\/em>. Applicants can be admitted into our MGP without support, but we appreciate the time and burden graduate studies place on students as they try to accomplish meaningful research, demonstrate good academic success and achieve financial independence.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because NC&#160;State&#8217;s Graduate Student Support Plan has added tuition expense for international students who usually can not become residents of North Carolina during their graduate program,<em> our ability to admit non-resident international students is limited.<\/em>&nbsp;International students are invited to apply and have made valuable contributions to the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transferring Between Degree Programs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students in our M.S. program may wish to bypass the Master&#8217;s degree and transfer directly into our Ph.D. program. To be eligible for transfer between degree programs, a student must provide their <a href=\"https:\/\/units.cals.ncsu.edu\/microbiology-graduate-program\/degree-programs\/master-of-science\/#committees\">advisory committee<\/a> with sufficient evidence of research ability, such as publications or presentations. Additionally, the student must present current research results and research objectives for the Ph.D. dissertation to their committee. Following this presentation, a letter signed by the advisor is forwarded to the Director of Graduate Programs (DGP) to recommend a transfer into our Ph.D. program. Upon approval the student follows the requirements of the Ph.D. program, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/units.cals.ncsu.edu\/microbiology-graduate-program\/degree-programs\/phd\/phd-preliminary-exam\/\">Preliminary Examination<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alternatively, Ph.D. students may consider transferring into our M.S. program after their first year in the program. In this instance, the student&#8217;s advisory committee must meet to specifically address the status of the student&#8217;s program, and a letter signed by thesis advisor must be submitted to the DGP with a specific recommendation. Graduates from <em>our <\/em>M.S. in Microbiology degree program who would like to pursue admission into our Ph.D. program would also follow these steps.
