As Director of the Plant Transformation Laboratory at NC State, Kedong has conducted research and delivered education and training programs across Asia (China and South Korea), Europe (Sweden), and multiple regions of the United States (Georgia, Virginia, Oregon, and North Carolina). He has advanced both the science and practical applications of plant tissue culture across a broad range of horticultural and agronomic crops, including apple, pear, cherry, grape, blueberry, strawberry, sweet potato, potato, ornamental grasses, flowering ornamentals, cotton, wheat, corn, and soybean. He has further enhanced genetic transformation systems for apple, cabbage, orchid, cucumber, rose, watermelon, strawberry, and cotton, and has conducted gene-editing research in biofuel crops, cherry, grape, melon, ornamental and turf grasses, strawberry, and sweet potato.
