{"id":358,"date":"2019-06-21T14:11:36","date_gmt":"2019-06-21T14:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/units.cals.ncsu.edu\/foodsafety-new\/?page_id=358"},"modified":"2021-09-10T20:04:12","modified_gmt":"2021-09-10T20:04:12","slug":"facilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/units.cals.ncsu.edu\/foodsafety\/about\/facilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences has seven pilot plants&#8211;housed in Schaub Hall (Raleigh campus), the NC&#160;State University <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsu.edu\/foodscience\/seafoodlab\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CMAST facility<\/a> (Morehead City) and The <a href=\"http:\/\/plantsforhumanhealth.ncsu.edu\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NC&#160;State University Plants for Human Health Institute<\/a> (Kannapolis)&#8211;dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in specific commodity and general discipline areas that include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>aseptic processing and packaging,<\/li><li>dairy products,<\/li><li>fruits and vegetables,<\/li><li>high viscosity\/particulates,<\/li><li>meats,<\/li><li>seafood and<\/li><li>visual imagery.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our pilot plant operation supports teaching, research and extension activities in the food science. Multiple research projects in flavor, nutrition, engineering, chemistry and food safety are actively ongoing. Many courses in our undergraduate and graduate programs utilize the departmental pilot plants to demonstrate process fundamentals in lectures while providing real-world experience in laboratories. Extension sponsored short courses are greatly enhanced by the in-house production equipment and facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Classrooms &amp; Laboratories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our classroom in Schaub 105 is fully equipped with a Mediasite lecture recording system, a SMART board, document camera, confidence monitors and a white board. We are enhancing and adding to our classrooms and teaching laboratories to hold large group training sessions and teach in GMP facilities. We plan to integrate the latest teaching technologies such as HD video recording and interactive SMART boards into these classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Upcoming Projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently projects are underway to enhance and add to our classrooms and teaching laboratories. This will allow us to better accommodate large group training sessions and teach in GMP facilities.
