CALS Commodity Group Funding Information
In CALS, we are fortunate to work closely with a large number of North Carolina commodity groups that fund our research and extension programs, which directly benefit and impact North Carolina.
Proposal and Report Guidelines
For all commodity group proposals and reports:
- All proposals and reports run through InfoReady
- CALS Pre-Award Form should not be completed as the proposal submission is through InfoReady
- See the appropriate RFPs in InfoReady for each commodity submission requirements
- All deadlines are firm
- Required to use the appropriate commodity’s proposal and budget templates as provided directly in the InfoReady site for proposal submission
- Complete and upload the templates in their original formatting as Word (.docx) and Excel (.xlsx) files
- Note: Do not alter the basic structure of the templates and do not pull them into Google Drive/Docs/Sheets as this breaks the required formatting
- Proposals will be returned if not in the proper format or using the most updated version of the proposal and budget templates
- While proposals can include information regarding funding beyond one year, funding will only be for one year, and PIs must resubmit for additional years
- If requesting continuation of funding, the proposal must have the same title as the previous year(s).

FAQs
How much money can I request in my proposal?
Answer: The range of funding is contingent upon the commodity group; however, these are considered smaller projects which can range from $3K to $25K with potential for larger projects up to $50K for Peanut Growers, NC Sweetpotato Commission, Corn Growers & NC Soybean Producers and NC Small Grains
Can faculty salaries be included in the budget?
Answer: Commodity groups rarely fund faculty salary or fringe benefits with the exception of occasional minimal summer salary and fringe for 9-month faculty
Can I put graduate student stipend and tuition on my commodity proposal?
Answer: To the extent the funding range (discussed above) allows for graduate stipend and tuition, most commodity groups will fund both with the exception of NC Soybean Producers. NC Soybean Producers will fund stipends but not tuition costs.
Can I change the format of the application or budget template?
Answer: No. These are created to be consistent and easily combined into a booklet for the Commodity groups. As indicated on the website, any altered templates will be returned to the faculty member for revision.
How will my proposal be reflected in the RED System?
Answer: CALS C&G will work with the submitting faculty to create the appropriate PD records in the RED System. This will occur once the InfoReady components are completed and funding determinations have been made by the applicable Commodity group.
